There are three varieties (with some intermediate shapes) of Hymeniacidon perlevis in the Netherlands: 

  • with pointed protrusions (from which the species takes its Dutch name)
  • branched- or hand-shaped
  • crust-forming (one which was often confused with Mycale (Carmia) micracanthoxea)
