There are three varieties (with some intermediate shapes) of Hymeniacidon perlevis in the Netherlands:
- with pointed protrusions (from which the species takes its Dutch name)
- branched- or hand-shaped
- crust-forming (one which was often confused with Mycale (Carmia) micracanthoxea)
